About Artspace

As a non-profit gallery, Artspace's open application process welcomes exhibition proposals from artists and performers. The gallery's mission, to promote the understanding and awareness of contemporary visual and performance art, is made possible by its dedicated artist members and volunteers and through contributions from the public and community.

History + Mission

Artspace began in 1988 as an association of artists interested in exhibiting their work and providing a space for other artists to reach a wider audience. Since then, Artspace has maintained a gallery committed to showing first quality visual art in a variety of innovative styles and media and has hosted numerous performances each year. Artspace's audience and participants are an overlapping group of artists and the general public from the Richmond area, extending through the mid-atlantic region. Artists are provided physical space for professional gallery exhibits and venues for performances of music, poetry, dance, etc.

Artspace offers free admission for gallery exhibits, a venue to enjoy a wide range of performances, and opportunities for the public to learn about contemporary artists, their artwork and the creative process.

In the 1990s, Artspace helped establish the First Fridays Art Walk in the downtown area of Richmond, VA. In 2004, Artspace moved to the Manchester district, anchoring an artist center called Plant Zero where it continued its monthly exhibitions and performances including Slam Richmond Poetry events through December, 2020. Through Artspaces years at Plant Zero, the Manchester district became highly developed, transforming from unused warehouses to a location filled with condos and apartments for individuals and families in all economic ranges. This development became problematic for Artspace due to the ever decreasing amount of parking spaces available for our visitors and artists. Plant Zero also suffered from many leaks that couldnt be fixed due to the age of the building, so Artspace decided to use the COVID downturn as an opportunity to relocate again. Artspace signed a lease for a new space in the Stratford Hills Shopping Center in spring of 2021 and we are ready to begin renovations to this space that will make Artspace a focus of the Forest Hill neighborhood of Richmond. Artists and art lovers alike are excited to have Artspace in this new location.

Artspaces mission is to promote the understanding and awareness of contemporary visual and performing art. Now in our new location, Artspaces goals remain focused on the presentation of artwork and performances to the public but we are now seeking to expand our goals to art-related education and outreach. We are in the process of renovating our new gallery to provide space dedicated to classes, workshops and lectures. We want to reach out to younger audiences to inspire them to become future artists as well as expand the knowledge and practice of art for all individuals throughout their lives.
