Artist Statement

I have made art with charcoal and oil paint most of my life and my living with photography most of my life. For many years, I have been adamant about keeping my art making and my "day job" (photography) separate from each other. With the advent of digital photography, I have found it harder and harder to keep these two ways of imaging apart.

In order to give my photographs more of a drawing-like nature, I began to deconstruct and texturize them in an attempt to make them less photographic. In this body of work, I have photographed my charcoal drawings, reconfigured them digitally and produced giclee prints. I then reworked some of the prints with charcoal.

With this process, I attempt to bring together the most basic way to make an image, using charcoal on paper, with the advanced technology of photography and digital manipulation.
