Artist Statement
There are multiple layers in my paintings. Compositions of squares, bands, and rectangles, and gestural painting and drawing are repeatedly developed and then covered up leaving only those elements that are essential to the finished work. The central theme of my art is an exploration of tension and ambiguity. There are no predetermined constructs or predetermined relationships. The structure of each painting is developed as the work progresses, and ultimately arrives at an end point. There is an intended roughness to these paintings. Paint is loosely handled and heavily applied. Despite this approach the paintings are meant to be experienced as much for their meditative presence as for their emotionality. My intent is for these black and white paintings to have a powerful simplicity and a ragged eloquence.
