Brooke Rogers' latest paintings, completed in 2010, comprise a lot.

The HURRICANE is like God, like all nature, beyond any power to control or understand fully, taking over and changing the course of life, sometimes. Hurricanes are thought of as destructive, bringers of chaos, like life's proverbial storms. But satellite images show the structural similarities from one to the next. Meteorologists describe storms as more or less 'organized', or 'defined'. And we personify them with names, eyes, and arms. God sends storms, yes, but all his works are purposeful.

The GEOMETRIC panels derive from the maze. The intersecting bars suggest both plans and elevations the bird's-eye view, and the street-level perspective, in one. Embedded in many of the compositions are dialog boxes, suggesting a reciprocal conversation between above and below. If there is a formal language shared between the personal singular and the personal omniscient, surely it is the language of prayer and revelation.

The FIGURES are in dialog, too. The patterns within or surrounding the figures come directly from traditional Amish quilts, often made as wedding gifts (Brooke was married this year). The quilt patterns resonate because they stir up Brooke's first love, geometric abstraction, and they are a kind of worship in primary forms.
