What I'm supposed to say, now, to help you out, is where it comes from, this preoccupation with cloth. Why do I create shallow space tableaus, draped in color, a common object, slightly off center, venerated?

Well, there were "May Altars" way back, shoe boxes and cigar boxes lined with bright "cyan" blue crepe paper and a small exquisite (or not) statue of the BVM. My first still life set ups.

And the fabric store, floor to ceiling bolts ranged by color. Cottons, velvets, dress weight woolens waiting to flow over shoulders, caress a hip, float over a dance floor, frame a window, veil a bride. Sometimes just a precious remnant of intense color - 3/4 of a yard of royal blue taffeta, a wonderful thing never transformed.

Early sculpture used polyester double knits (remember those) stretched over metal and wood armatures or straight tubes of fabric, floor to ceiling (stuffed with balloons, sculptural falsies!)

Looking back, it's been there always. Fabric over form, echoing, mimicking, suggestive and sensual, the vitality of color and contrast. The manipulation of stuff, by cut and stitch or the push and pull of shape under stretched cloth. Yard goods flowing over torso/table, rippling through the scene, piling up layer on layer, like water, like mountains, like silken clouds in the wind.
