Artist Statement
My current body of work is a response to the feelings of grief, isolation and the powerlessness of loss. The figures' arms have fallen from their bodies. This is meant to be a symbol for their feelings of helplessness. Several of the characters have traded their arms for wings in an attempt to escape their overwhelming situation, but the gifted wings are too small to be helpful. Other characters cling desperately to the fallen limbs in an attempt to maintain their fragile sense of self. Several of them have the heads of fish or birds to symbolize their lose of self as they become creatures driven by instinct rather than logic.
Most of my finished work has a rough gestural construction. With the standing figure, I wanted create something that has a more delicate, vulnerable feel, while still maintaining the desperate quality of my other work. She is meant to represent the fragile hope we cling to in a world that no longer makes sense.
Brief Biography
Adam Bradley is a Washington DC based artist. He is primarily a figure sculptor, constructing his work from found materials, welded steel, wood, cast metals and ceramics. Adam was born and raised in Northern Virginia. After receiving his Masters Degree from Maryland Institute, School of Art: the Rinehart School of Sculpture he returned to DC to continue making and showing his artwork. He teaches 2d and 3d Foundations, Drawing and Sculpture at George Mason University, Northern Virginia Community College and Catholic University. His work has been included in group shows at Atlantic Gallery, Chelsea, New York, the 2018 Foggy Bottom Outdoor Sculpture Biennial in Washington DC and a solo exhibition at Hillyer Art Space in Washington DC.
