Artist's Statement
I began my exploration in sculpture with wood, creating pieces that referenced architecture, landscape, and the human body to explore ideas associated with identity and domestic life. Disillusioned by the reality of domesticity, I became more concerned with specific physical changes in modern society: obesity, artificiality, and our diminishing natural environment. I needed to move away from the appropriately confining wood structures I was creating to a medium with more fluidity that could represent the transformations of nature. My wood squares, spikes, and blocks, gave way to spirals, spiraled ceramics and spiraled metal. Spirals gave way to spouts and holes as I began incorporating undersea forms into larger ceramic pieces. The holes and spouts allowed me to distort a piece (in form and meaning) to the point of becoming void of all seriousness. Constructed through playful experimentation in various mediums, these sculptures verge on absurditythe only constant of humanity.
